As a part of a grand makeover of underground stations in Boston's South Station, CDC worked with Machado & Silvetti to design six glazed steel entry structures, four housing escalators and two housing elevators, that would evoke the feeling of Japanese lanterns floating above the streetscape. Design included a twin-plate steel rafter with slender steel purlins running between the plates, fabricated into "ladders" for shipment and installation on-site. CDC was responsible for insuring the structural integrity of the steel structure, and developing a concealed, custom, ball-and-socket glazing attachment mechanism for structural glazed laminated glass. During the construction phase, CDC worked with J.F. White Contracting Co. to perform structural calculations for the steel structure, review glass and glazing shop drawings; and review a prototype factory assembly of the structure and glazing; and provide periodic on-site observations to insure the structural integrity of the total system. CDC was also hired by Ryan Iron Works to engineer and detail a steel-framed wire mesh bird screen system to mount within the entryways of these structures.
